We have taken action urging governments to do more to tackle climate change

Urgent action is needed!

The 2022 Global Investor Statement to Governments on the Climate Crisis calls on world governments to implement a medium and long-term climate strategy which focuses on transitioning away from fossil fuels, ending deforestation, bolstering climate finance, and strengthening disclosures. It has been signed by 602 investors, including Jesuits in Britain, representing $42 trillion in assets under management.

Stephen Power, who leads on responsible investment for Jesuits in Britain, said:

“The urgency of action is reinforced by the IPCC’s 6th Assessment Report which states that global warming could exceed 1.5°C by as early as 2040 unless global greenhouse gas emissions are significantly reduced. We have joined with many other investors to urge governments to take bolder action in the interests of the planet.”

In 2019, Jesuits in Britain opened the Laudato Si’ Research Institute which “conducts cutting-edge multidisciplinary research for societal transformation on the most pressing ecological and societal issues of our day”. This work is rooted in the theological and philosophical wisdom of Pope Francis’ papal encyclical, Laudato si’, which was published in 2015. In this landmark document, His Holiness makes clear that “concern for the natural world is no longer optional but is an integral part of the Church teaching on social justice”.
